INVIDIA

Envy: The rich commit the invidious sin / Of lording over other men.

L'Envie: L'homme riche ignore le poids / De l'envie qu'il conçoit.

L'Envie (Envy) is a more abstract variation, as is Bosch's subtle depiction of jealousy, ill will, and overbearing status. In order to project an air of haughtiness, the bassoon is forced uncomfortably into its highest register over an extremely turbulent piano accompaniment in which intense chromaticism and dotted rhythms in the bass recall the machinations, grandeur, and excesses of seventeenth-century courtly life.
