"La Colère" (Anger) contrasts vividly with the preceding theme. After a violently passionate exordium in the piano derived from the harmonies of the original theme, the bassoon interjects a chromatic scalar statement in contrary motion to powerful bass octaves in the keyboard. The piano completes the statement, followed by another chromatic interjection in both instruments. At last, the bassoon takes up the principal theme, and after another chromatic interpolation, completes its melodic statement as the variation draws ominously to a close.
