As soon as I read this poignant imagery from Paul Verlaine, I immediately thought of a theme already in my music sketchbook. These lines seemed to perfectly express the feelings I had when the theme was first created—especially since I had already used the plaintive voice of the bassoon in the sketch. As a result the music for the "Metz" Concerto was completed very quickly in one sitting. It is also the basis now for a fantasia for bassoon.
