Variations concertantes sur le nom de Paul Verlaine pour basson et orchestre: "Son joyeux" ("Joyful Sound")

(Concert Variations on the Name of Paul Verlaine for Bassoon and Orchestra: "Joyful Sound"

"Son joyeux, importun, d'un clavecin sonore...." ("Joyful, troubling sound of a resonant keyboard....")

The main texture of this piece consists of two complementary melodic lines stated respectively in the bassoon and the first violins. The remaining strings provide an accompaniment which is primarily chordal in nature, interrupted by two episodes—the first imitative and the second dance-like. The soggetto cavato appears at the opening in the bassoon and presents motives developed throughout.
