This short piece for bassoon, cello, and piano was composed for the Fourth Delian Suite. It is based on the outer panels of The Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymus Bosch. I was struck by the somber feel of this painting. I tried to complement this mood by focusing on melancholy modes and low-pitched melodies and drones. I used high dissonant tones from the piano for rhythmic and harmonic interest. They seem to correspond to the lighter shades of grey in that colorless dreamworld.
